Los cenotes no son exclusivos de la Península de Yucatán, el estado de Tamaulipas cuenta con uno propio: se conoce como El Zacatón, y es el más profundo no solo de México, sino también del mundo entero.
Se trata de una enorme poza (como se le conoce localmente) de más de 300 metros de profundidad y 99 metros de diámetro en su superficie. Inundada de cristalina agua termal que se aprecia de colores verde-azul y verde esmeralda, debe su nombre al cúmulo de islas de zacate que movidas por el viento flotan sobre sus aguas.
El Zacatón está situado en el municipio de Aldama, cabecera municipal al suroriente de Tamaulipas, a dos horas de Tampico, y pertenece a un sistema de cenotes localizados en el rancho la Azufrosa, aunque sobresale entre los otros por su considerable flujo de agua.
Su formación data de hace millones de años como consecuencia de erupciones volcánicas submarinas. El azufre del agua fue erosionando tanto la piedra caliza que se formó una caverna enorme que hoy pueden admirar sus visitantes.
Es un sitio natural hermoso e impresionante, de clima cálido, rodeado de árboles y pastizales bajo un cielo azul y despejado.
Su belleza y características han atraído a buzos expertos deseosos por sumergirse en sus aguas profundas. Aunque bucear en él está reservado solo para profesionales, y nadar no es una actividad que prefieran realizar los turistas, debido a su intimidante dimensión.
Como dato curioso, la NASA ha utilizado El Zacatón para hacer pruebas con los robots que planea enviar en la misión de exploración de Europa, una de las lunas del planeta Júpiter.
Muy cerca de este cenote se encuentra la Caverna de los Cuarteles. Durante la época de nuestra Revolución, este sistema de cavernas fue usado por los rebeldes como escondite de ganado y botines robados para financiar el movimiento. Dentro de ellas se pueden observar estalactitas y estalagmitas, diversas columnas y bóvedas de formas singulares e interesantes, y también murciélagos.
Conocer estos lugares de Tamaulipas es sin duda una experiencia fascinante que te dejará recuerdos llenos de emoción e imágenes impactantes.
