Esta antigua capital indígena custodiada por el volcán Popocatépetl -en realidad dos ciudades, San Pedro y San Andrés- son la sede de la pirámide más grande de Mesoamérica, que casi con un millón de metros cúbicos, los expertos aseguran que es más grande que la de Giza.
Santuarios prehispánicos, arcos mudéjares, cúpulas barrocas, conventos-fortaleza y la inagotable creatividad indígena conviven en la explosión espiritual y artística de lo que hoy en día es Cholula.
En este pueblo mágico muy cercano a la Ciudad de Puebla destacan sus múltiples templos de época colonial -tantos, que se dice, hay uno por cada día del año. La magia de Cholula se vive y se disfruta en sus tradiciones.
COLINDANCIAS
Al norte con San Pedro Cholula, al sur con Ocoyucan, al oeste con San Gregorio Atzompa y al oriente con Puebla de Zaragoza.
Portal Guerrero
Es el portal más largo de la ciudad, cuenta con 44 arcadas y dos laterales. Cada arco tiene 3.10 m sin construcción en lo alto, con techo bóveda catalana que servía para proteger del clima a los viajeros y caminantes, en ese tiempo se les atendía con alimentos gratuitos. Se cuenta que es el más largo de México y también de América Latina.
Zona Arqueológica de Cholula
Es una de las zonas arqueológicas más importantes del país, la pirámide principal tiene el basamento más grande del mundo, con 400 metros por lado, superando a la del Sol en Teotihuacán y la de Keops, en Egipto.
Su nombre es Tlachihualtepetl, que significa cerro hecho a mano y sobre ella se encuentra el Santuario de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, que fue construido por los españoles en 1594.
Su cúpula está cubierta de talavera y en el interior se puede observar un altar neoclásico y a la virgen, cuya devoción se difundió por la creencia de que se les apareció a los españoles en la noche triste.
Para su investigación los arqueólogos excavaron en la construcción cerca de 8 km de túneles que permiten la observación de las distintas fases y hoy pueden ser visitados.
Dentro de las riquezas de este sitio se encuentran 2 murales prehispánicos, el mural de los bebedores y el mural de los chapulines.
La gran pirámide está dedicada al dios Chiconquiahuitl (de la lluvia) el cual era venerado por la cultura Olmeca-Xicalanca hasta el año 1300 D.C.
